Search Engine Optimisation Tips by Scotty
"I've got all my keywords listed in the meta tags but my site hasn't shown up on any
search engines"
We hear this sort of comment all the time. Listing your keywords in your meta tags is only a very, very small part of
a completely and correctly optimised website.
Essentially, there are two distinct parts to a properly optimised website - Offpage Optimisation AND Onpage Optimisation.
Offpage Optimisation is THE most important aspect of ranking well in ANY search engine, period. Search engines have a
high regard for Offpage Optimisation! Onpage optimisation, the one most people DO know about, is still important but
just not nearly as important as offpage optimisation.
To optimise your website to its full potential you will need to consider the following (this is only a VERY brief overview):
Offpage Optimisation...
Link your website to websites that have a high search engine ranking and have similar content or theme to yours;
Link your website to other sites that link to top ranked websites with similar content to yours;
Submit all of your website's main pages to the top search engines for indexing;
Submit articles (and links) about your products/services to relevant websites, blogs, noticeboards, forums,
newsletters etc. Be sure to include your main keywords in the articles where possible;
Purchase text advertising on sites similar to yours and be sure to include your main keywords in the advertising.
Onpage Optimisation...
Correctly format your meta tags, meta description, site map and robots.txt file where applicable;
Do not overload your meta tags or web pages with your keywords - the search engines will ban you for 'keyword spam';
Place your main keyword/s in italics, heading tags and image alts up to five times on each page;
Be sure to include your main keyword/s in your page title. Don't use 'and' just put a '|' between them.
Search Engine Optimisation is a very important factor for anybody that wants a high rank in the search engines for
their business website. Unfortunately it is also very time consuming and can be very costly especially if done
incorrectly.
