Internet Installation and Computer Help Services
Katanning Web Services offers inexpensive, yet reliable internet
connection services and computer help to small businesses and individuals in and around Katanning.
INTERNET INSTALLATION - dialup and broadband installation is available for Telstra Bigpond, Westnet and
Optus services plus any other ISP that supplies an installation kit.
Before calling be sure you have spoken with your preferred ISP (internet service provider - see below). They will advise you
whether you can get dialup or broadband plus organise an installation kit to be sent to you. IMPORTANT: Your ISP will
supply you with a username and password (or get you to choose one). Be sure to keep a copy of these because
without them you/I will not be able to install your internet.
For further information or to arrange installation contact Scotty via the Contact Form.
COMPUTER HELP SERVICES - hardware components installation/re-installation (monitors, printers, scanners, modems etc.),
software and operating system installation, spyware/adware & virus prevention and removal, complete system cleanups
(for slow computers), plus other computer services as required. I also conduct training
courses in a variety of fields.
Please contact Scotty Tidey via the contact form
to discuss your problems or requirements.
Please note: Non-profit organisations are eligible for special discounts.

1. TELSTRA BIGPOND (4 out of 5) - Their share prices might be poor but their internet services are very good. They have
very reliable and fast internet infrastructure in the Katanning area. Their installation kits are very good
quality with a good modems and easy installation guides. The Bigpond online help services are quite good except
sometimes you end up with too much information to sort through. The main downside to Bigpond, and Telstra in
general, is that most telephone support and marketing services are done from India with operators who have limited English.

2. WESTNET (3 out of 5) - Their internet services division is growing rapidly especially as their prices are
very competitive. This is in stark contrast to their domain name and web hosting
services that are a complete rip off - 2 to 3 times higher priced than similar services available elsewhere
(blatent self promotion here:) like at RedCarDomains.com (LOL) - not that I care, I've gained at least 20 ex-Westnet Hosting
customers in the past two years! Anyway, they seem to have a reliable internet service in
Katanning itself but out of town it is not so flash. If you only want (or can only get) dialup internet then they are
well worth looking at for good connectivity and cheap prices. Their installation kits are fairly good but I tend to do
the setups manually because the installation CD wants you to sign up again! Westnet's help services are quite good but the
online help does fail to provide simple answers at times. If you already own a modem you can pick up a Westnet
installation CD from the Katanning Regional Telecentre in the Central Arcade, Clive Street.

3. OPTUS (1.5 out of 5) - You want confusion, you got it. I have had a constant stream of clients asking for help with
setting up Optus Broadband on older computers. Unless you have a Pentium 4 computer running an updated version of Windows
XP or Vista you will have to manually load configuration files - don't even bother with Optus if you have a Pentium 3
running Windows 98!!!. Now, I'm computer literate but this is a confusing (and stupid) thing for ANYONE to have to do let
alone someone going online for the first time. The installation CD and the online help are no help and their telephone
service, like Telstra, is manned by people with poor English. The difference - Optus' operators have poor English AND no
technical expertise. Anyway, I gave Optus an extra half a mark because on a new PC their internet connections are quite
fast and overall their prices are competitive.
